Heroine Continues: New Level Creation Tools!


Hello everyone, and welcome to our 6th devlog! It’s hard to believe we have been working hard on Heroine for almost 3 months now; thank you for being here and supporting us! Today's log will include an update from our programmer, ganthefan, as well as another sneak peek at some art LoFi Boi has been working on!


What is Heroine?

For our new readers, Heroine is a dungeon crawleresque game initially prototyped during the Dungeon Crawler 2023 game jam. This time Joanne will be ascending a great mountain. Players need to learn and remember the the attack patterns required to defeat enemies as they progress through each dungeon and ascend the mountain. We are adding a lot more depth to the gameplay of dungeons and also greatly improving the art as well. Play the game jam prototype if you haven't already here!


Art Log - Custom Alphabet:
We discussed Professor Woomba in our previous log, and we’re excited to unveil our design for the Toomba alphabet:


We received feedback at the GMTK Game Jam that our font was sometimes illegible, so we opted to make a custom alphabet which we can use and adjust in the future!


Technical Log - Level Creation Tool: 
It's been a while since we have updated you all on our programming progress! Here's an excerpt from ganthefan on what he's been implementing: 

"I've been working more on the level creation tool and adding features to it! Our game is unique in that every frame is hand-drawn; this will allow the game to look stunning, but it also makes it hard to playtest level ideas. The approach we're adopting is that the first version of the level will be specified in 2D, then the level design tool will automatically generate a play testable version of the level in 3D; this way, we can immediately test the level idea! This will reduce iteration times and make the level design process low friction, which will hopefully translate to faster iteration and a more fun game."
